Did you ever have the experience while watching a video the music was so loud, that you hardly could recognise the voice over? Or vice versa, the music was mixed too far to the back?
Well, there’s a simple trick to solve that. In this Audio Hack we show you how you get the magic back in a video with music and a voice over.
Hi! I’m Jente Kater from Voicebooking.com. When you are a video editor you sometimes have to mix the audio of a video yourself. And that can be pretty hard. There is a voice, and there is music, and you have to blend those two together. Listen for example to this one. [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept, a niche in the market. And now you need…” A great voice, great music, but you aren’t listening to the voice over now.
You are listing to: “What am I hearing over here?” Okay, there is a simple trick. Just put the music lower. Yeah, you can do that, but then the magic will be gone. [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept, a niche in the market…” It’s like this, but the magic is gone. And the music is there to add magic to your video.
Okay, let’s put it back to zero, and think of a solution to tackle this one. It’s a really simple one. In a voice over there are frequencies you need to hear to get the message across. Those frequencies are between 2 and 4K hertz. And if you boost them, the magic will get across better. So if I am going to the equalising section of the voice over, over here. And I am boosting those frequencies here, let’s say 3K hertz plus 9 db.
Let’s listen to this. [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept…” It’s better, but still the music is a bit loud. And now there’s the trick. Here. I am going to the music, the equalising section. I am doing exactly the same, but in a reverse way. So I am going to leave out some frequencies. Okay, let’s listen to it. [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept…” So, here you are! I haven’t done anything with the faders. You see, they are still on zero. It sounded like this. [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept…” And by adding those two: [Audio] “So you’re a start-up, you have a fantastic concept…” And there it is. The magic is back. It’s one plus one is three.
