You’ve all experienced it as video content creators. A voice over script that is solid as a rock but doesn’t quite work out so well once recorded. What could be the cause of that?
In this video I present a simple script writing hack that will help you with your next voice over script. Sometimes a voice-over script looks nice on paper but once it’s voiced it doesn’t quite pan out. What could be the cause of that? In this video below I present a writing hack that’s actually too simple for words.
We all know it: you have written language and there is spoken language. And sometimes you have those scripts that contains just a little too much of written language. Look at this sentence. There’s nothing wrong with that, right? Well… until you pronounce it. Go ahead and do it.
Before we continue think back of the first time you saw this sentence. Your eyes read it and probably your eyes went back and forth to understand what was standing there. That’s something your eyes can do but your ears can’t. Your ears don’t have that rewind knob.
Think of it as your journey. A well-written sentence in spoken language travels from A to B, then to C and then to D. And without you even noticing it, a darn lot of sentences in written language don’t do that. So, if the words in this example had been in the right order, you wouldn’t had to work to understand it with your ears.
So, just shuffle the sentence and make it like it’s been written for the ears. Like here… So, the hack, as promised, very simple: when you have finished your script, read it again and look at each sentence to see if the timeline is correct. If a sentence goes from A to C and then D and then back to B, you know there is something wrong. And put everything in the right order and your script has become more conversational again. And you ears will love them.
Is it a mortal sin that there is sometimes written language in a voice-over script? Well, I don’t think so. But the effectiveness of your video skyrockets when the listener doesn’t have to work because the message is offered on a silver platter.
